High Performing Organisations

Are HPOs an illusion or a reality? Let’s find out!

Organisations who achieve results that far exceeding those of their peers – for a minimum of five years – are known as High Performing Organisations.

The High Performance Organisation (HPO) Framework is used by managers globally. It helps decide what to focus on in order to improve the organisational performance. It’s all about balancing worker needs with the organisational needs. The key characteristic of a high performing organisation is consistency in results while managing financial resources effectively and efficiently.

High performing organisations have a clear set of goals and a razor focus on the direction to achieve them. Their employees are problem solvers, have specialised expertise, performance ethics, and also have the desire to innovate.

The diagram below can better identify the components of a high performing organisation!

These components can change the illusion into a reality. If taken into consideration and facilitated accurately, they can transform a low performing organisation into a high performing organisation.

How to Build a High Performing Organisation:

In order to become a high performing organisation, the following measures should be taken:

  1. Craft  Focused Strategies: High performing organisations develop strategies which yield positive results. These strategies are highly focused based on the input from both management and employees.
  1. Offer Unique Solutions for Customers: Employees should strive to provide world class value to their customers and should come up with unique and innovative solutions to meet and satisfy the customer needs and expectations. Employee skills, knowledge and experience should be utilised effectively and should strive to improve their performance to become and remain competitive and on top of their game.
  1. Alignment of People, Processes and Teams: High performance teams are always aligned and empowered. They act in accordance with a standard set of processes and ensure a high quality and consistent approach to workflow. They’re also often enabled by technology to meet the organisation’s goals efficiently.
  1. Offer Strong People Support: HR or the People function, always plays a phenomenal role in developing high performance organisations as it takes the role of strategic partner and guides the organisation, translating the business strategy into people objectives. It also becomes the enabler of the business and the function operates with clear implementation of strategic, functional, and transactional activities.
  1. Foster an Inclusive Organisational Culture: High performing organisations have a culture that fosters performance, focus on innovation, believes in teamwork and creates excitement for the future.

In order to have and retain a competitive advantage, it’s important to develop efficient measures which promote the organisation and its products at a global level. One of the prominent examples of a high performing organisation is Starbucks.

Starbucks

Starbucks not only focuses on the quality of the product, but also takes care of factors like ambiance, the location, the décor, and every little detail. Most importantly, it invests in its people to a high degree. This means they’re at the forefront of the organisation, not just profit and product.

Together with their high level of services, this proves Starbucks is a high performing organisation.

“Starbucks is seen, particularly by experts, as a completely up and running, fully functioning version of a modern ideal: an organisation that excels on so many levels that it far surpasses the competition”.

People – The Secret to High Performance

As People Specialists, it is time for HR to invest in employee development through training and also by rotating people by giving them different roles and responsibilities.By adopting a high performance and cultivating it in your organisation, it will encourage employee engagement and promote independent thinking.

Times and time again, people are always the most important drivers for outstanding performance. Therefore, a high performing organisation can become a reality, so long as the factors needed to build a high performance organisation become part of the organisational DNA. High performing people build high performing organisations.
